Clothesline of Quilts Project

Breckinridge County is participating in the Clothesline of Quilts Project sponsored by Lincoln Resource Conservation and Development Area, Inc. This project is modeled after the Adams County, Ohio “Clothesline of Quilts” their project encourages travelers to choose routes throughout the countryside instead of traveling along the interstate by placing painted quilt squares on highly visible barns and other structures. The Breckinridge County project encourages travelers to view our beautiful countryside and farming community.  Other benefits of the project include history, culture, arts, education and beautification of the area.

Partnering with the Cooperative Extension Service, and the Meade County RECC, the RC & D council is working to develop quilt trails throughout the six county RC & D Area. The counties include:  Breckinridge, Bullitt, Grayson, Hardin, LaRue and Meade.

Long range plans include working with other RC & D areas to develop a “quilt trail” along the US 60 corridor throughout the state. In Eastern Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio, groups have been working on an Appalachian Heritage “quilt” trail for approximately twenty years.

The BCCQP committee is working to develop a quilt trail throughout Breckinridge County which will show case our county and help promote local tourism.  The local committee hopes to have quilt blocks placed on barns and other structures all across Breckinridge County.  The BCCQP has developed a brochure which gives the name and location of each quilt block in the county.  The information is currently on the Breckinridge County Extension Service web site and future plans are to have it on the Breckinridge County Tourism web site.

Each block costs approximately $750 for materials, painting and hanging of the quilt block.  Local painters and the RECC are providing in kind donations to paint and hang the blocks therefore reducing the cost to $250 to pay for materials.

Anyone interested in participating in the Clothesline of Quilts project may pick up an application at their local Extension Service. Information on this project may also be obtained by contacting 270-756-2182.
